MAJOR PROGRAM UPDATE: As of July 15, 2026, there are some major updates to the ARM courses and program that are crucial for students to know. Please see the 2026 PROGRAM CHANGES section below for key details.

There are actually two paths you can take to earn your CPCU® designation: the traditional path and the ARM® to CPCU path. The ARM to CPCU option allows you to substitute some of the required CPCU courses with ARM courses instead, which ultimately means it takes fewer total courses to earn both designations.  In this post, we’ll share more about this program and give you the details you need to decide which path is right for you.

What is the ARM designation?

Besides the CPCU designation, The Institutes offers a wide variety of other designations too, including the Associate in Risk Management (ARM®) designation.

The ARM designation is focused on all aspects of risk management:

  • What are the different types of risks
  • How to assess and identify risks
  • How to develop risk control programs, to reduce their severity and frequency
  • How to finance risks, and find the means to pay for losses or damages when the risk is unavoidable

The ARM program is useful for anyone who evaluates risks or gives advice on how to manage risks. This can be nearly anyone in the insurance industry, but the designation is especially relevant for these professionals:

  • Risk managers
  • Risk analysts
  • Risk consultants
  • Safety and loss control professionals
  • Chief financial officers
  • Business continuity and supply chain experts
  • Agents and brokers
  • Underwriters

How does the ARM to CPCU program work?

The standard CPCU program requires students to take a total of eight (8) courses plus a mini-course on ethical guidelines:

  • 5 core classes:
    • CPCU 500 (overview of insurance & risk)
    • CPCU 520 (how insurance companies operate)
    • CPCU 530 (business/insurance law)
    • CPCU 540 (finance & accounting)
    • CPCU 550 (data analytics & data management)
  • 2 concentration courses:
    • Commercial lines (CPCU 551, 552) OR
    • Personal lines (CPCU 555, 556)
  • 1 elective course
  • Ethics training

The ARM to CPCU path allows students to earn two designations by taking the same number of classes:

  • 3 ARM courses:
    • ARM 400: Risk in an Evolving World
    • ARM 401: Holistically Assessing Risk
    • ARM 402: Successfully Treating Risk
  • 2 core CPCU course:
    • CPCU 530 (business/insurance law)
    • CPCU 540 (finance & accounting)
  • 2 concentration courses:
    • Commercial lines (CPCU 551, 552) OR
    • Personal lines (CPCU 555, 556)
  • 1 elective course
  • Ethics training

In other words, you are replacing three (3) of the core CPCU classes with the three (3) ARM classes.

Is the ARM to CPCU path easier?

In general, most students report that the ARM courses are just as difficult as CPCU courses, and some even find the ARM courses to be more challenging. Students should not assume that the ARM to CPCU path will be easier.

It is certainly possible that those who already have risk management-related work experience or training may find the ARM classes to easier, but it is always best to reserve judgment on that until after you have seen the material.

Should I do the ARM to CPCU program?

At first glance, the ARM to CPCU path may seem better because you get two designations rather than one, for doing the same amount of courses. However, you should at least pause to consider the difference in content covered.

The ARM to CPCU path essentially replaces CPCU 520 and CPCU 550 with three ARM courses. Those two CPCU courses have more to do with how insurance companies operate and try to improve their profitability and financial security, so they could be quite appropriate for someone looking to get into management. In contrast, the ARM designation courses are focused on risk management & risk assessment skills.

It is important to consider your end goal and what kind of knowledge would be most beneficial for your professional goals.

2026 Program Changes

UPDATE (as of July 16, 2026):

Today, The Institutes put up a post in the CPCU Candidates Facebook group providing new information that may differ from the information they previously provided over the phone to us.

On July 15, 2026, during a detailed and lengthy conversation on the phone, The Institutes informed us that ARM 54, 55, 56 will not count towards the ARM to CPCU path after September 15, 2026. However, today’s Facebook post states that any version of the ARM designation will still provide credit towards the CPCU designation. It is unclear if The Institutes is referring to ARM 54, 55, 56 in their post, so we do not know if this means they changed their position or are referring to something else that they did not discuss with us on the phone. A screenshot of their Facebook post is provided below.

As we recommended in our original post, due to the complexity of the evolving policies, we strongly encourage all students to contact The Institutes directly to confirm if and how their ARM credits may carry forward.

As of July 15, 2026, The Institutes made some major changes to the ARM courses and also to some of the waiver options that applied to ARM. We called The Institutes to find out the key details you need to know. Here is what we learned:

  • The ARM 400, 401, and 402 courses/exams have all been updated to include new topics relating to technology (e.g., artificial intelligence, automation, data analytics, and more).
  • Credits earned under the expiring versions of these courses will carry forward.
  • Students who purchase their course material on or after July 15, 2026 will be purchasing the new versions of these courses.
  • For the test window July 15 to September 15, 2026, The Institutes will offer two exam versions for each of these ARM courses, one based on the expiring course material and one based on the updated courses.
  • As of July 15, 2026: you can only purchase the expiring exam from The Institutes’ main page for the ARM designation. If you purchase your exam from any other page on The Institutes’ site, you will be purchasing the new version of the exam.
    • To purchase the expiring exam:
    • If you purchase your exam from these pages, you will be purchasing the exam that is based on the new material:
      • ARM to CPCU Path page
      • ARM 400 page
      • ARM 401 page
      • ARM 402 page
  • For students who passed ARM 54, 55, 56 and are relying on those to waive ARM 400, 401, 402:
    • On July 15, 2026, The Institutes told us the following:
      • ARM 54, 55, 56 cannot be used to waive the new versions of ARM 400, 401, 402
      • Because the expiring versions of ARM 400, 401, 402 don’t fully phase out until September 15, 2026, students have until then to use ARM 54, 55, 56 to earn their CPCU designation under the ARM to CPCU as long as the student can fully complete the entire ARM to CPCU program (including ethics, matriculation, etc.) by that date.
    • On July 16, 2026, The Institutes posted the following in the CPCU Candidates Facebook group, which suggests that they may have changed their position and that ARM 54, 55, 56 will still somehow provide credit towards a CPCU designation:
      • [quoted in part]: “despite some concerns about the old ARM designation and credit toward the CPCU, you don’t have to worry! If you currently hold any version of the ARM designation, you will absolutely still get credit toward your CPCU.”

Due to the complexity of these changes, we still highly recommend that students contact The Institutes directly to double check how the credits they have already earned will be handled in their specific situation.

Why our study programs work

Lots of companies offer study materials too, but here is why our study programs stand out:

See the concepts in action

You will be tested on your ability to apply the concepts to different situations, so we provide plenty of examples to show you how things work.

Less is NOT always more

Some things won't make sense until you have enough background info. We give extra context where you'd need it to fully grasp the material.

Learn AND remember

Besides learning the content, you have to remember it all. Our paid study programs include our famous study guides that make it super easy to refresh your memory.

About your instructor

Insurance Exam Guides (IEG) was founded by Stacy Trinh, CPCU®, who first started her teaching journey at the request of her co-workers who were preparing for their CPCU exams. Because of her reputation as an adept trainer and motivator, Stacy's co-workers had asked her to lead a class. The feedback on her sessions and study materials was overwhelming positive, and her students encouraged her to share what she had to offer with the rest of the CPCU community.

Since then, Stacy created a library of study materials for both CPCU® and AINS® that have helped thousands of students pass their exams. As an accounting major and former claims adjuster, her style of instruction incorporates both a financial and operational perspective that makes her study materials well-rounded. She looks forward to helping many more students continue to succeed, including you!
